ORGANIC SKINCARE MADE WITH SPIRIT

Today let’s talk to…

Skin & Tonic London

Skin & Tonic does skincare simply, honestly and ethically. They create organic, sustainable skincare and use no more than 7 ingredients because they believe less really is more. Their products are made from organically certified ingredients sourced from small and local British & French producers/ farmers, and Fair Trade women’s co-operatives in Ghana & Sri Lanka. They think it’s time for EVERYONE to start doing business in a more honest and sustainable way. People, Planet and THEN Profit is the mantra at the heart of Skin & Tonic.

How did you come to set up Skin & Tonic ? What inspired you to create your brand?

In 2010, I was diagnosed with severe endometriosis. It was a difficult time and I struggled both emotionally and physically. Eventually, I decided that I had no choice but to re-evaluate my whole lifestyle. Little by little, I started making important changes: I stopped drinking and smoking, I started to do yoga, eat nourishing foods and, I began to look for skincare products that were free from endocrine disrupting chemicals, carcinogens and skin irritants.

I was already a self-declared beauty junkie and I quickly became obsessed with trying to find a stylish, minimal, organic skincare. I felt very strongly that I had the right to know and understand exactly what I was putting into, and onto, my body and I got confused trying to decipher huge ingredient lists on products.

I was convinced that the market was crying out for a cool, simple and transparent skincare company that only used therapeutic plant based ingredients. After months of making skincare in my kitchen I eventually I took the leap, quit my job and spent a few years retraining in essential oil science and skincare formulation at Neals Yard Remedies. Josh (my boyfriend and tv editor) soon followed suit and together we launched Skin & Tonic in September 2014. All our products are crafted by people in Hackney.

How would you describe your brand philosophy?

Less is more.

We create British, minimal, organic skincare using simple, highly therapeutic plant ingredients.

Where do you source your ingredients from?

We source our ingredients locally where possible, so for instance we work with small UK & French producers to source organic oils such as Calendula, Pumpkin Seed, Roman Chamomile, Lavender, Borage, Thistle, Rose, Carrot Oils.  It is important with us to have close relationships with our producers. We follow the seed to skin concept and like to be across our supply chain from the moment the seed is planted to the moment it touches the skin. Our products are certified organic by the Soil Association.

Favourite thing about your job?

I’m a bit of a beauty geek and I love to spend hours formulating new products and working with our amazing ingredients. I’m an aromatherapist by background so I am passionate about plants and their therapeutic properties.

I also love connecting with people. I feel so lucky to have met so many passionate, talented people in the wellbeing community, be it our producers, customers, therapists, retailers and now our team members. It’s these people who inspire us and make Skin & Tonic what it is. It wouldn’t exist without this amazing community of people.

If you had to use only one product from your range, what would it be?

I am a huge fan of our Calm Balm because it’s an incredible multi-tasker. I take it everywhere with me! This rich cream balm works to soothe and hydrate dry skin patches, lips and body. It can  be used as a therapeutic treatment by massaging it into your temples before sleep or it can be used with yoga practise to help calm the mind. It is made using soothing and sedating oils such as calendula, lavender and chamomile oils to calm both the skin and the mind.

What is your most treasured wellness secret?

Movement, fresh air & sunshine. It’s simple but it works wonders.

What is your approach to nutrition? How do you keep healthy?

Balance. I love home cooked, healthy food but I’m certainly not adverse to a chocolate brownie or scoop of ice cream now & then!

Fave kitchen staple:

Virgin Olive Oil & Avocado

Can’t live without:

My mum and Josh.

Your healthiest passion:

Yoga (it’s magic).

What do you do to relax?

I find Cleansing with our Steam Clean balm a lovely, relaxing ritual each morning and evening, the aromatic oils help me unwind whilst deeply cleansing my skin.

I also love long baths & walks around Victoria Park.

Your current mantra?

Stick to your vision, no matter what.
