Today let’s talk to…

Founder: Tanita de Ruijt

Location: London, UK

Jamu Kitchen makes Turmeric Tamarind Tonic, a herbal healing drink from Indonesia, known locally as jamu. A daily glass of jamu is venerated by Indonesians of all ages for its purifying, healing and beautifying powers. It is made in small batches for maximum freshness and taste, using native southeast asian herbs and spices that are freshly ground and brewed to fully acitvate their nourishing properties, producing a vibrant gold liquid.

How did you come to set up Jamu Kitchen?

The journey began in Indonesia, where I discovered Jamu: an integrated system of inner and outer health & beauty. Just as India has Ayurveda and china has its traditional medicinal system, Indonesia has Jamu. Each system relies solely on the power of natural ingredients such as herbs and spices to maintain whole body health.

What inspired you to create your brand?

It’s been a reaction to the constant flood of mixed messages and opinions about health – they’ve caused for a lot of confusion. We’ve become so concerned with what we can and can’t eat, that we’ve overcomplicate things. For many, just the thought of eating healthy has become intimidating, complicated or expensive. We’ve lost track of the joy of food and the simplicity of eating well: it’s in simplifying what we have that we will come to eat better.

Asian culture and food is all about balance – a concept that we, as increasingly health-conscious westerners, can all benefit from. Our aim is to blur the lines between food and medicine by combining mystical connections to the ancient world and demonstrable nutrition benefits in the modern one.

How would you describe your brand philosophy?

Our ethos is simple. We want to bring you what our ancestors have known for generations – foods for pleasure as well as healing – using influences from traditional Asian food cultures.

Where do you source your ingredients from?

We source our ingredients from organic vegetable suppliers like Real Foods.

Favourite thing about your job?

Being able to share old-world culinary traditions that have sustained healthy people for centuries by making them more accessible to others.

If you had to use only one product from your range, what would it be?

Fresh whole root turmeric of course!

What is your most treasured wellness secret?

We’ve got plenty Jamu secrets up our sleeves. Follow us on instagram for all of our natural health & beauty tips.

What is your approach to nutrition?

I’m highly passionate about the traditional foods movement, taking influences from around the world and the ethos of Asian food cultures in particular. My approach to cooking and eating is fad-free and naturally emphasises nutrient-dense, real food, and values quality, environment, and community over the convenience of processed, additive-laden products that are the norm on supermarket shelves.

How do you keep healthy?

By taking a more balanced approach to food and lifestyle – creating meals for pleasure as well as healing. I eat all the “junk” food I want, as long as I cook it myself. Food should contribute to your experiences of taste, texture, delight, energy and nourishment.

Fave kitchen staple:

My cleaver. It’s basically a Chinese chef’s knife that chops, slices and crushes anything – including coconuts.

Can’t live without:

Coconuts. In any shape or form.

Your healthiest passion:

What do you do to relax?

Yin Yoga.

Your current mantra?

Eat your medicine. Heal through food.
